Surfer Dave Rastovich is on the Garage Sale Trail... Sat 5th May!
Pro-surfer turned environmental activist Dave Rastovich will be putting his green thinking into action by setting up his very own garage sale, Aussie styles!
‘Rasta’ will be cleaning out his closets for the 2012 Garage Sale Trail. Swearing by the cause he says the best thing he has discovered at a garage sale was an “Unbelievable boat and trailer I scored for just two hundred dollars”.
The 2012 Garage Sale Trail is a community-based market place that happens all over Australia on one day, and is in alignment with what Rastovich is all about.
‘Rasta’ is the face of Billabong’s Be The Change You Want In The World environmental campaign that incorporates a range of eco friendly recycled boardshorts and Organic T-Shirts. On a personal level, he is also campaigning to stop the slaughter of whales and dolphins in Japan by enlisting the help of world-renowned surfers and musicians to support the cause.
As a junior world champion Rasta learnt contest life wasn’t for him and pushed him to the life he lives today. He gets paid to surf and film at exotic locations around the world without having the stress of the grueling contest circuit.
This lifestyle combined with hard work has made Rasta the feature of many surfing films including Billabong’s 'Framelines' and ‘The Free Way’ and more recently, Jack McCoy’s 'Blue Horizon' alongside Billabong team mate Andy Irons, a movie that has proven a breakaway success from other surf movies of our time
Residing on the Northern Rivers in NSW, ‘Rasta’ will be cleaning out his closets for the 2012 Garage Sale Trail – an initiative encouraging Aussies to get rid of their unwanted belongings in typical Aussie fashion… with a garage sale of course!
The event is about making sustainability fun and social and using the Internet to get people off the Internet. It’s all about discovery, creativity, community and micro-enterprise.
While Rasta admits the most treasured possession in his garage is his “surfboards… lots of surfboards”, his tip for a successful garage sale remains:
“Give everything it’s own space and be willing to let go of things that might have a sentimental value to you but you don’t necessarily need anymore. Attachment promotes suffering I have heard”.
Check out the video to see some of Dave's garage sale items!

By the grace of Gill goes Canberra United, to W-League victory.
GRACE Gill is a Premiership winning footballer reaping the benefits from her sport.
Only last month, the 22-year-old realised her dream of winning a W-League Grand Final representing Canberra United, and did so with the simplest of mantras.
Her enjoyment of kicking around a soccer ball has also helped her kick a few sporting goals along with seeing parts of the globe she would not have imagined ever being able to visit... not to mention travelling away with a bunch of like-minded friends.
"I've made some of my best friends from playing soccer and travelled to some of the most incredible places" Gill said.
The centre-midfield started playing soccer when she moved from Darwin to Canberra with her family in 1997 because "it was what her friends were doing", so she joined in. Before long, and after "Bending like Beckham" with a few gal-pals, Gill climbed the player pathway to become part of the Academy of Sport to eventually be selected by Canberra United coach Robbie Hooker to be play for the nation's capital since the W-League's inception in 2008.
Preparatory to Gill jetting around Australia to compete in the W-League, Gill won herself a ticket to Russia as part of the Young Matilda's team for the 2006 World Youth Cup. While the recognition of young talent in Australian soccer was great, Gill says the defining moment of her career was being picked as part of an All-Stars team to take on Italy following the first season of the W-League.
"It made me realise I was able to compete amongst some of the highest quality footballers in the country," Gill said.
With her playing CV leaping forwards in leaps and bounds, last year Gill was able to take her skills over to the USA to play in California with a team called The Los Alamitos (LA) Vikings in a semi-professional summer competition against other clubs along the west coast of America, and Gill said she was better for the experience.
"The players there rely on their physicality to differentiate themselves, so they are much more physical and I had to toughen up," Gill said.
And with more experience to her boot Gill saw the winning formula within Canberra United allowing them to take out the 2011/12 W-League.
"This year with the inclusion of Jitka Klimkova as coach and some additional international players, something sparked particularly well within the team.
"We knew we had the potential to take ourselves through to the Grand Final... we spent countless hours together training, travelling and becoming great friends, so winning in the end is a testament to the Club and the girls that were around me".
