MO'ONIA GERRARD is putting her talents beyond the netball court to promote and develop young Indigenous and Pacific Islanders to one day represent Australia.
The half-Tongan born Narrabeen native says she is proud of her heritage and hopes to spread the word to young rising stars of multicultural background "that they too can make it".
"Our culture (Tongan) is pretty laid-back and it's hard to coach that," Gerrard said. "Playing for Australia is pretty intense, I have to admit," she adds.
Gerrard is known for her solid efforts competing for Australia, and this year in the ANZ Championship for the NSW Swifts. Her trophy cabinet boasts an array of national titles, an ANZ Championship title, a World Championship title and is a Commonwealth Games silver medalist. The list actually goes on… and on.
In 2011 Gerrard has put heads together with NSW Council for Pacific Communities to help share her success to help young rising multicultural stars realise their "netball dream". The result has been a series of inaugural netball clinics throughout Sydney this year along with plans to launch a player development academy.
The first Indigenous and Pacific Islander clinic was held in Sydney in April... check out the video and see a sneak-peak Gerrard's new life as a fully-fledged ambassador take off!
